There is a specific feeling that hits Madison in late April and early May. The lake breeze finally turns warm, the Terrace chairs are back out, and there’s that bittersweet "end of an era" feeling in the air.
If you’re getting ready to graduate, you’ve spent the last few years (or more!) making this campus your home. At Cameron June Photography, I don’t want to just give you a gallery of stiff poses. I want to capture the way this place actually felt. From the iconic Bascom Hill to the bar where everyone knows your name, these photos should feel like you.
This post is for you and can be used to plan and prepare for the best grad session; it's all my tips and tricks in one read curated specifically for my favorite clients — UW grads.
Iconic UW Locations
Bascom Hill & Abe
It’s the heart of campus for a reason. Instead of just standing still next to Abe, let’s get some movement. Whether it's walking toward the hill, laughing on the steps, or for the brave sitting on Abe's lap, we’ll capture it all. We’ll mix the beauty of the architecture with fun poses and movement to make sure you get the pretty shots everyone needs and the candid ones you'll actually love.
The Wisconsin State Capitol
There is something so timeless about the white stone and the giant doors of the Capitol. It’s the perfect spot if you want graduation photos that feel a little more elevated. The light bounces off the stone beautifully, giving everything a clean, bright look that feels classic and high-end.
The Spots You Loved Most
Golden Hour at the Terrace
We can’t do a Madison graduation session without the Memorial Union Terrace. We always aim for that sunset glow right as the sun starts to dip. It’s the sound of the water, the sun hitting the terrace chairs, and that feeling of a Friday afternoon that you never want to end. It’s the perfect place for grad photos.
Your Favorite College Bar
To really tell the story of your college years, we can go where you actually spent your nights. Whether it’s a dark booth or your favorite spot on State Street, grabbing a drink for a few photos can be so fun. These shots aren't about being perfect; they're about being real. It’s a toast to the friends you made and the nights you'll never forget.
The Details: Props & Personality
The best galleries are the ones that feel lived-in and personal. I love capturing the candid moments and fun energy with items that are unique to you. Don't be afraid to look at your Pinterest inpso and bring fun props.
- Push the Limits: Don’t be afraid to bring your Pinterest inspo to life - or push past it. Whether it’s a vintage camera, a bouquet, or just a vibe you’ve been dreaming of, I'm here for it.
- The Grad Essentials: We’ll make sure to get those detailed shots of the gown, the cap, and the tassel flip. If you have Frat/Sorority or special academic stoles, we’ll feature those to celebrate the community you built at UW.
- The Little Moments: Some of my favorite shots are the ones in between—like a quick touch-up of your favorite lipstick or the way you look adjusting your cap in a reflection. Don't be afraid to be present in those moments; if you want candid photos, you have to be willing to let go, be present, and have some fun during your session.
- The Champagne Pop: If you want that classic celebration shot, bring a bottle of bubbly! It’s the best way to shake off any nerves and get some genuine, laughing photos on the Capitol steps.
Elevate Your Look: What to Wear
This is your moment to lean into your personal style. Graduation photos are a celebration, and I love when my clients use it as an excuse to get dressed up.
- Intentional Textures & Movement: Think about how your outfit will look in motion. Satin slips that catch the golden hour light, delicate lace details, or structured blazers that add a sophisticated edge. If your dress has movement, like ruffles or pleated linen, it makes those walking shots on Bascom look incredible.
- Flattering Necklines: Don't underestimate the power of a great neckline. Square necks, off-the-shoulder styles, or chic mock-necks frame your face beautifully and add that editorial touch to your close-ups.
- The Final Touch: This is where the magic happens. A pair of statement heels, sunglasses, or even a bold hair accessory can take a look to the next level. These accessories also give you something to play with in your hands, which helps those candid, unposed moments feel natural.
How to Get the Best Out of Your Session
- Chasing the Sun: I always try to schedule these for the 1–2 hours before sunset. The light gets soft and warm, which makes your skin look amazing and makes the whole campus look like a movie backdrop.
- Schedule Early: To make sure you get the best session times and dates that work for your schedule, book as soon as you can. Spring in Madison fills up fast!
- Shake Off the Nerves: My goal is to make this feel like a fun hang-out. We'll play music, move around, and keep things light so your genuine personality shines through.
Let’s capture your graduation...
These four years go by in a blink. These photos are about more than a degree. They’re a way to hold onto the person you were and the memories you made before this next chapter begins.
